Is it safe to vaction in France?

Is there any reason that you feel it would not be safe to vacation in France? I just recently left France after living there for several months. In general I can say I felt safer there than in many cities in the US. We have walked in the streets in Paris with friends fairly late into the evening and never felt threatened in any way.
That is not to say you should not take normal precautions. I was always extra careful in big crowds in the train stations, etc., but that is normal in any part of the world. There will always be a few pickpockets here and there. As far as the riots, etc. that were making all the news, normal citizens going about their business, tourists, etc. did not seem to be greatly affected by this. During that period people just didn't hang out on the streets in those areas. Living there, I felt that it was more or less racial fighting in certain neighbourhoods, since most of the people involved were immigrants.
France is a wonderful place and I hope that you won't be afraid to go and enjoy it because of something you heard on the news. Having traveled fairly extensively, I would personally place France low on my scale of most dangerous places.

I have been thee several times and can only say hello and goodbye in french, it is very safe! you just need to be smart. Dont carry your valuables in plane sight, walking down a dark alley by yourself at night. Same common sense you use in your home country and you will be fine! It is SAFE and a wonderful place to visit.

I would think so. The safest thing is to stay in tourist-y areas unless you really know where you're going or have a true understanding of the language. Stay somewhere nice or in a large city where you can get around with lots of help! And carry traveler's checks.

I have always felt so, whether in the big cities (although I have to admit the places I go when I visit tend to be occupied by a lot of people) or in small towns. In general, people have been friendly and helpful. Civic order seems to be good in general.

If you can speak a little french it goes a long way. The only unsafe experience I had in France was the dislike of Americans who can not speak French. I would recommend staying in a hotel where they speak English. I stayed at a quaint place and the owners were wonderful. I actually got sick while I was there, and they arranged for me to see a doctor locally. All worked out well. I got my sense of smell back and was able to enjoy the wonderful experiences of France (although because of the medication I could no longer drink alcohol). The riots and things you are exposed to on TV occur and are very dangerous. but most of that occurred in specific areas that are not touristy. Depending on where you are going you should not have to worry about that.

Generally speaking you should have few problems in highly touristed areas.

However, you should also be aware that violent crime has been increasing at a disturbing pace all over Europe.

Although many people will try to tell you that anyplace in Europe is far safer than the United States they are misinformed.

A recent study by a Leiden University in Holland revealed that there is a greater risk of being a victim of violent crime in France than in the United States.

France is one of the most romantic places that you can find....
yes, it is safe, why did you ever think that it cannot be safe....
although iam not in france , i would like to go there inthe future....

Ahah! Don't go in France!! There are a lot of bad people who don't like american! They will kill you! Even in paris! France is in fire! Islamist are going to take the Palais de l'ElysÃ©e! Realy, don't go in Paris! And if you would like go in province, you're very unlucky, because it has a farmer riot...

No realy, France is very safe. Of course, there are no tourists who go to Harlem or in Camptown at midnight, so it's the same thing in France, and in all over Europa, you shouldn't go in the "hot" suburb the night. But the majority of the suburb is very calm and pretty. So you can go in France without stress, M. Sarkozy, the sherif of France, protect you! ;-)

Ps: To the person who say that if you can't speak french, stay in your hotel. Where are not in Mogadiscio. Is not beacause one person doesn't speak english to you because you're american, that you mus say, stay in your hotel... I had got the same thing in Washington, and i don't say to my friends, "Stay in your hotel!"

If you are going to Paris, stay in Paris. Don't go anywhere in the suburbs. Oddly enough, they are more dangerous than the city itself.
