La Defense is the perfect trap for unwary tourists, it says Paris in the address when it is in fact outside of the city.
It is extremely boring, and will cost you more in taxi that the extra money put in a hotel in Paris itself especially if you want to stay late in Paris as the metro stops running at around 1 am.
From Saint Michel count from 20 to 40€ depending on the traffic, possibly higher.

La Defense is safe but boring and a poor choice for a tourist. At night it is more or less dead.

Stay in the center, not in La Defense.

I would avoid staying there. Even if the hotel is cheap, you'll pay for it in taxis and agro during your visit.

Get a hotel more centrally located and I think you'll have a much better trip!

safe but boring place.
Don't bother taking a taxi, take the metro to get there. The line 1 starts at la defense and end at chateau de vincenne, the opposite end of paris. It allows you to go almost all the touristic area very quickly, and it's a lot cheaper than the taxi.

Hi i think La Defense is safe, but like all the big cities you have to be aware, taxis are very difficult to catch in Paris , the best way i think is the metro.
Good luck!!

Paris is safer than the USA if you use your head and act like a reasonable tourist instead of a rude American jerk. A taxi ride could cost anywhere from 1 Euro to 100 Euros depending on the honesty of your Parisian taxi driver. They are known to take foreigners "for a ride" ... all over Paris, if you catch my drift.
