Is root beer readily available in France? Would an exchange student have trouble finding it?

I have never seen any root beer in France at all but haven't checked in US grocery stores. I know there are a couple in Paris so you might want to try there.

I admit I have never looked for root beer in France which may account for never havng noticed it.

I do know that Cadbury-Schweppes, which has a large presence in France is also the owner of the A&W Brand which should be familiar to any American root beer drinker.

Sadly, a check of Cadbury-Scweppes corporate website reveals that they do not sell root beer in France. I presume that such a large and agressive company would sell a signature product like A&W in France if there was a market for it. This leads to the conclusion that there is no such market.

Of course, the real question is why you would travel all the way to France so that you could drink exactly the same soft drink you have at home.

Be that as it may, while there may or may not be root beer generally available in France I can assure you that you can get Dr. Pepper at an establishment called "Breakfast in America" in Paris at 17, rue des Ecoles in the 5th arrondissement. Perhaps they can stock some root beer for you.

No root beer I am afraid.
All the French people I know are not very found of that drink anyways!
When in France try some things that you can not find in the US, Orangina is a great fizzy drink, very popular during the summer as also is "Gini".
We have also something called "Limonade" which isn't lemonade at all. The closest is maybe a sugary club soda, I just love it, add some "sirop de grenadine" or "sirop de citron" (in the US it's the stuff they use to make italian sodas) it's great.
Enjoy and don't be afraid to try new food and drink it is a big part of the fun to be daring and change your habits.
When I went to Japan, I tried something called "Pocari Sweat", it is very good, if you can get over the name!

Hello, Rhonda C. Well, root beer is not "readily" available in France, I'm sorry to say this. I've never tasted it as it's not common in France. Nevertheless I've already seen Dr.Pepper in France in the "Monoprix" supermarkets. Since they are Monoprix all over France you shouldn't have any trouble finding one no matter where you'll be living... If you'll be staying in Paris, I know a grocery store near République (10th arrondissement) where they sell anglo-saxon products. My sister and I went and bought some chips and some ginger beer. I also found some english products in the Indian district in Paris (10th arrondissement again). Maybe it's because of their "english heritage", I don't know. Well, I hope this helped. Enjoy your stay in France ! ;)
---- I forgot the adresses : * L'épicerie anglaise : 5, cité du Wauxhall (they also have a website : http://www.epicerie-anglaise.com/CATA/cray.php ) and * Velan : 84, passage Brady (but it's a small section, they're not "specialized" in english products of course but rather in indian stuff ;) Anyway, I think you'll find what you need.

No Root beer
No Mt Dew
No Dr Pepper

Try Orangina...it is good...

I don't represent a sample of the french population, but I think that root beer won't have a success in France. (I may be wrong)

For me, when I was in US, it was hard to finish the bottle...

Sodem O
When in Rome, do like the French.

Drink wine

If you don't drikn alcohol, there are plenty of fizzy kids drinks in the supermarket. But not the particular one you want.

middnightangell
Unfortunately, they do not have rootbeer in France. They don't even have Mt. Dew. I went through withdrawl when I was there. I guess it's too sweet for them? Sorry.

lovepets
buy it on ebay
