When it was built in 1889, the Eiffel Tower was the tallest monument in the world. Gustave Eiffel designed it for the International Exhibition of Paris of 1889, a big show that marked the 100-year anniversary of the French Revolution. This magnificent structure was meant to celebrate the great engineering and scientific achievements of the time. Not everyone was happy about it -- some important Parisians protested the construction. The Eiffel Tower was nearly torn down in 1909, but the antenna on top was useful for telegraphy. Later, the 1,062-feet-high tower was used for radio and television transmissions. In 1930, New York's Chrysler Building topped it in height, but the Eiffel Tower is still a famous symbol of France.

Interesting, isn't it? =) Please check out the links in the Sources sections if you want more information.

It was built in 1985 for the James Bond movie "A View to A Kill" so that Roger Moore could have a fight with Grace Jones on it.

There was a French engineer by name of Eiffel who lived in the mid to late 1800s. He had this crazy idea that steel was such a strong building material that it was possible to build really really tall buildings made out of steel skeletons. So for the World's Fair that was held in Paris, France in 1889, he had the Eiffel tower built, to prove to the world that skyscrapers were possible. And this worked out fine until September 11, 2001 when a bunch of people decided that maybe skyscrapers aren't all that great after all.

You have enough answers, but I want to say you that the same Gustave Eiffel was the designer of the armature of the Statue of Liberty from New York harbor.

eiffel tower was built to commorate the great exhibition.

The tower was originally built as an exhibit at the Paris World's Fair. At the time, Parisians considered it an eye-sore, and were planning to tear it down after the fair. I suspect now it's just a tourist attraction and cell phone tower.

prettyinpink
It's spelt Eiffel.
