At night, make sure you stay in well lighten streets. Take a look at the map before you get there, put it in your bag. Try not to look like a tourist, act like you know exactly where you're going.

This is just general advice for anywhere in the World. The area is usually safe, and 23.30 in a touristic area is quite early! There are some restaurants there that are openn 24h/24h. If the weather is good, lots of people will still be walking around, having dinner or drinks. Just keep your money well hidden, Montmartre is mostly for tourists and usually very crowded nowadays, pickpockets' paradise...

I wouldn't let my wife do it. It can be a pretty tough neighborhood, especially if you have to walk through the dark narrow streets. In fact, you might find the metro ride at that time of night a little scary as well. I took my teenage daughter to a concert in the Montmartre there in the early evening and she didn't feel very comfortable walking around there, even with me (6'3", 220lbs) with her.

I'd recommend spending the money for a taxi from the airport to take you directly to the hotel.

usually round then the streets are still very busy, but make sure you stay in well lit areas, its like any other city stay aware of where you are and what / is around you.
