Is there a law in France that says you can go to school and live for free if you speak fluent French?

Live for free? You are thinking of Dubai I think where oil money makes working a chore instead of a need.
No, there's no such law, and there's no free lunch. If you are in the French school system then you have free education in that you do not pay tuition, but you still have to pay for other things, lunch, books, other activities... However your parents and every other other tax payers are paying for this system through their taxes so it is not really free, it is only less onerous than paying up front as the cost is shared by all.

WISE OWL
No. If you are French, have French parents or have a visa that allows you to reside in France, and you are school age, then state education is free though you still have to buy a certain amount of things necessary for your studies.
If you want to attend a university and you do not meet these criteria, here is the official site that tells you what the procedures are:
http://www.consulfrance-washington.org/spip.php?article385
French universities do not accept a student just because they are able to speak French fluently. Certain qualifications are required to be put on roll.

Nobody "lives" for free in France, even if they speak fluent French. You have to pay for your upkeep, your rent, your food, your transport, etc...and once your education is completed and you have a salary, you pay taxes like everywhere else in the world, and these subsidise education and other common services.

Francoise
Use your brain. If such law exists, no one will need to work here in France and the economy of the country will collapse. Foreigners really have so much illusion about France.

No. It would be wonderful if that were true, parce que je parle francais - but unfortunately it isn't, so I will be forced to pay my own way in France.

xiberotar
You need to get a VISA or a "carte de sejour"

Everybody in France can go to school or high school for free but "live for free??? Dude...

Mango
No... That wouldn't make any sense...

well you could probably go to a school that's almost free, but you would have to pay for the rest !

angelguy_paris
Of course not but if you go to school and dont speak French it will be a problem...its like if a guy only speaking Chinese wanted to enter a US school...he will face the same problem of communication.

sas s
name me a country where you can "live for free"? wake up! school is almost free but the rest, forget it!
