WHENEVER A GROUP OF PEOPLE ARE LUMPED TOGETHER AS IF THE ALL ACT IN EXACTLY THE SAME WAY, WHAT IS SAID CANNOT BE TRUE.

AMERICANS ARE CONDITIONED BY ADVERTISING TO TAKE SHOWERS OR BATHS TWO OR THREE TIMES A DAY TO SELL MORE PRODUCTS, LIKE LOTION, SOAP, SHAMPOO, CONDITIONER, DEODERANT. A MIDDLE INCOME OR ABOVE AMERICAN WOULD BE MORE APT TO BELIEVE THIS NECESSARY THAN AN AVERAGE PERSON AROUND THE GLOBE.

I TRAVELED IN GERMANY IN 1974 AND MET A MAN IN MUNICH, WHO TOLD MY HUSBAND AND ME THAT HE WOULD SHOW US SOME SIGHTS IN THE CITY IF WE WOULD LIKE. WE TOLD HIM WE NEEDED TO GO BACK TO THE HOTEL AND SHOWER, THEN WOULD MEET HIM BACK IN THE CITY SQUARE. HE LAUGHED AND SAID. "YOU AMERICANS. ALWAYS TAKING A SHOWER. DON'T YOU KNOW YOU DRY UP THE NATURAL OILS IN YOUR SKIN AND HAVE TO BUY LOTION TO REPLACE IT? DIDN'T YOU ALREADY TAKE A SHOWER TODAY?" WE STARTED TO LAUGH AND SAID, YEAH, WE DID AND IT WAS KIND OF SILLY WASN'T IT.

IT WAS A GREAT EXPERIENCE SEEING OTHERS AND OURSELVES IN A NEW WAY.

Yes, it's called 'une douche'. It may be true that the French (and British) are not quite so anally fixated on showers as the Americans, though.
