Yes learn as much as you can. Many parisians in Paris speak great english BUT you have to try to speak french to them first to prove your worth their time. Believe me...they can tell from your accent that you speak perfect english!!!

Incroyable! Believe me, you won't be interacting with anyone in France without French.

Put simply, it's going to be a lonely, isolating and dull existence without French language skills. More importantly it tells French people just how unimportant you think their culture is; good luck with that.

Get learning, you'll enjoy it.

Unless you have unlimited funds at your disposal, I highly suggest you learn French. You will have to interact with many public offices for your residency permit and work permit, your taxes, etc. and you'll be expected to speak with them in French. Of course if you have money, you can just pay someone to do it for you.
PS. I think it's a bit ignorant to live somewhere for five years and make no effort to learn the language. Turn the situation around. What would you say to someone coming to your country trying to live and work without speaking the language? "We speak English in America/England/I don't know where you come from."

Liz
you should at least learn the basics before you go. you will learn when you are there but you need to know it if you want to communicate with people

Yes, it is impossible to live here without knowing French because all of the French ppl do not speak English...

uhhh....yeah.You should. I was only there for the summer but it helps to be able to communicate. Not everyone can speak English and it is only polite to use their language. It will be easier on you as well.

angelguy_paris
The answer is YES....It's like living in the US or UK for 5 yrs without speaking English...a bit hard to my view...so you better to learn some basic French then during the 5 yrs time you will practice it , know it and wont regret that you can speak it...

xiberotar
Of course you need to learn French!!

it is very important to learn french if you know you are going to be living in france and interacting with french people you have to learn the lannguage

Marymiss
if there is one country in the world where you need to know their language, it's France. They are very proud of their language, and often don't' even answer you if you speak another language. Paris is a bit better, and some restaurants have English menus, but in other cities, if you don't' know the language, you cannot even get a glass of water. So, learn at least the essentials.
