Like all rulers such as presidents or dictators, kings can do good things, bad things or make mistakes. Louis XVI initially was an absolute king so in theory he was powerful but he was not a bad or cruel ruler. At the outset he was actually liked by the people who called him the "bien-aimé" (beloved), but he inherited a terrible burden when he became king at the young age of twenty and had an enormous responsibility as the government was deeply in debt. None of the problems that he inherited were of his making. He also lost popularity when he married a wife who was disliked because of her origins and who was seen as profligate whilst the poor people were starving. As a person he was indecisive but he really tried to compromise and when the new constitution was set out, he took the oath and submitted to the demands of the revolutionaries. After that he was actually powerless but was kept as a figurehead because the rest of Europe had royals as heads of state and the French people in the countryside still favoured tradition and royalty rather than revolution. After his acceptance of the new régime he was held as a prisoner in his own palace in Paris until the blood thirsty revolutionaries decided to do away with all the nobility, take their possessions, and let the people rule. Things really got out of hand and on the 21rst 1792 September, the National Convention declared France to be a republic and abolished the monarchy. Louis was made a scapegoat for France's problems and executed.
Constitutional kings or queens have very little power as the country is effectively ruled by a parliament or an assembly, but in any case in the short time span between the constitution being adopted and the king's imprisonment and subsequent execution things could not change for the better and he was blamed for things that were not his fault at all. At heart he really was a very simple man who did not particularly enjoy the trappings of wealth and power and his favourite pastime was not dancing or socialising, but pottering quietly with clocks.
