Old ones, now dead :

Georges Brassens, Serge Gainsbourg, Gilbert Bécaud, Yves Montand, Charles Trénet, Tino Rossi, Edith Piaf, Barbara....
Another very good singer was Jacques Brel,. Hsang in french, but he was from Belgium.

Actual most known singers : (not young for most of them...)
Patrick Bruel, Michel Sardou, Charles Aznavour, Henri Salvador, Louis Chedid, Jean-Jacques Goldman, Johnny Halliday, ...and of course there are many younger singers....

Hey, you got many answers.
Tiramisu's right, but a little late.
Cecile's got the best answer.
Eclipse_'s right too, but theu are too much commercial "artists".

One good and RECENT : Thomas Fersen.
He's only too much parisian.

Right now I'm a little sick of Julia Zanetti. She sings the Barbie movie songs so my 5 year old is smitten. We have to play her stuff in the car or she wont cooperate on the way to school.

I'm just happy it's not Lara Fabian...

The first that comes to my mind is Gilbert Bécaud. He's really famous in Europe (but he's an oldie).

Juliette Gréco

Yves Montand wasn't just an actor, he also sang I think.

otherwise I can just send you to Wikipedia:

Johnny Hallyday popped into my mind immediately (even though he's Belgian). My french teacher loves him to death and played his music a lot in class. He's practically a living legend. I've become appreciative of his music ("Noir C'est Noir"; brilliant!)

Yves Montand and Charles Aznavour are the most representative singers in french.

trisha
I have Janet Seidl Comme ce, comme ca album. I got it in singapore though.

Rose T
BTW, Charles Aznavour has a fabulous voice, but he is not really French. I love Edith Piaf.

If you want to know singers who sing in French but are not necessarily French themselves, add Bruno Pelletier, Garou, Patrick Fiori to the list. Pelletier may be French, I'm not sure.

Thanks to whomever corrected me. I was under the impression that Aznavour was not born in France, but moved there as a child. Sorry for the mistake!
