Learning French in France, will this help.? |
Well in summer of 2009. I plan to go to Lyon, or Paris, France to learn French and become fluent in the language. I am going to France because that is where I am going to college. I will probably stay for 2 or 3 weeks. I have not yet decided yet. But when I go, I will probably be close to conversant in French or an high intermediate level. So will going to France and being surrounded by nothing but French people help me speak French by forcing me to speak the language in order to get around and socialise with people. I will also have some friends their to help me that I met on the internet. So please tell me, will this help.
Please and Thank you. |

It's the only real way to become truly fluent. But if you can stay longer than 2-3 weeks, you would improve even more. I think it is a great idea! Bon courage! |

I speak 4 languages fluently. The only way to be completely fluent is to live in the country for some time. 3 months is best. A few weeks not enough to reach fluency but you will surely improve! |

YESSS. as long as you know bonjour. and wheres the bathroom your fine. It is wayyyy more accurate to learn a language in that country because you learn how they actually talk. for example, this summer i went to italy and even tho im italian, i only kno about half the language, after my trip i was speeking much better italian. |

Depends if you'll be really alone or in a group of foreigners like you - in the second case I'll advise you : RUN AWAY -

2 to 3 weeks won't get you fluent, but you will become MUCH more comfortable. Take it from a fluent speaker, it takes almost two years of continuous immersion to become fluent =] |

it all depends on your personnality; if you meet people easily, are not shy and prefer to learn a language speaking it, if you are active and have French classes there too, if you don't speak with English speaking people at all, ok you will learn a little (but 2 or 3 weeks is not enough to learn a lot).
(All that I know in English I learnt it in France, my trips to England didn't learn me much, because I was not active enough) |

They will try to speak english to you because they all want to practice. I had this problem when i spent a semester there. Spending a few weeks there will probably help you out slightly... especially with slang..but unless you're trying very very hard, speaking nothing but french, and studying at least 2-4 hours a day, it won't really do too much. |

Yes, but stay away from english speakers.
I spent one month in Caen, France a while ago. Unfortunately, I fell in with a bunch of English speakers and didn't really speak a lot of French outside of class. The experience was not as helpful as it could have been had I really remained isolated.

definitely. You need to learn the language for you to understand the happenings around you. Start learning few words like elle, mademoiselle, soiree, imbroglio, faux pas, chignon, and so on... |

I went to France for a mont one summer and had a great time. As for the french, being from an anglophone reigion of Canada, and an anglophone family, the only time I ever got to speak was to my french teacher at school. The best thing, language-wise, about going is being able to use the language. Speak to the French in their language. You will learn not necessarily a lot, but a considerable amount about the language, depending on your skill level when you go. When I went, I was almost fluent, so I did not learn as much as someone else may have. Again, I just enjoyed the oppertunity to use it, in somewhere other than Québec (I can't understand the Québequois when they speak). No offence to Québec, I just have no Idea what they are saying most of the time. I also love the lifestyle and mentality there.
Bonne Chance, et Bonne Voyage! |
