Maybe try this-
http://www.amazon.com/French-Action-Beginning-Language-Textbook/dp/0300058217
This is the best method for learning.
Some colleges/universities use this method. Maybe try to see if there is a local school.
There is stuff online
http://french.about.com/
http://www.frenchtutorial.com/
http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/french/
http://www.bonjour.com/
and schools in France

Bonne chance! Good luck! |

It depends what you are moving for.
If it just holidays dont need to improve too much your French. If it is for job and life, you better learn some basics then try to take some lessons once in France. After a time of living in France, some people (a bit close) might consider helpful to correct your French all the time and it can be annoying.
Try the websites given above. If you need French courses once in France, try Alliance Française. It can be a bit expensive. Contact the city or a university. Or ask in Yahoo!Answers France. ;o)
My girlfriend is Brazilian and that's 2 years she is in France. She speaks and writes French better than many French people now. She took some lessons during the first year. So it is possible to improve quickly.
If you seek to understand more why French people behave the way the behave and their culture, I recommend the books of P. Baudry : http://www.pbaudry.com and the book "60 million Frenchmen cant be wrong". |

Well best learn at least some basics, because it's essential that you now what you read (for sure if moving to stay)best take a course and make conversations as much you can in French like in shops. |

Don't worry we're not going to eat you. And going to France ain't the most difficult choice. I am in China and some of my French friends managed to survived even though they didn't speak a word of Mandarin. Needless to say here English won't help you a lot whereas in France it can.
Just try to learn some basics and your stay will be easier the first days. |

Don't worry. Many people speak english (ok, it is not a perfect english but...) At least you can speak with your hand. Anf if you don't want to be lost, take a guide book and when you want something show the book to somebody, then he will explain you...
Last year i travelled in China without to speak chinese and i am still alive...
Good trip!!!! |

The fastest (but expensive) way to learn French quickly:
http://www.rosettastone.com/en/individuals/languages/french
You don't have to be fluent, but it is necessary you know a few words of French. Here are some basics, with audio files:
http://french.about.com/library/begin/bl_basic.htm
The most important thing, is to be polite. So the most important words/phrases to know, in my opinion:
Hello: Bonjour
Please: S'il vous plait
Thank you: Merci
Excuse me/Pardon me: Excusez-moi/Pardonnez-moi
I'm sorry, I don't speak French: Je m'excuse, je ne parle pas le francais.
Do you speak English?: Parlez-vous l'anglais?
I really doubt you don't know a word of French! More than 28% of English is French words. If you want you can e-mail me.

One tip: don't get too good! Keep your French at a level that is considered "charming", where your accent and grammar problems are smiled at and worked around. Once you get any better, your slightest fault will be taken as a good excuse not to understand what you are talking about, if that suits the listener. You will never be considered bilingual by a French native speaker anyway, so just learn enough to make sure you don't starve to death. |
