My Great-Grandmother was French and born in France, can that help me, because Im trying to move to France!? |
My mother was half French and Half German, but born in Germany. Would this make it more simple to get passports, citizenship to France and/or Germany? Thanks for ANY and ALL answers. I am trying to move to France and wanted to know what would be the most simple way to obtain passports, citizenship because I am a first generation American... THANKS!! :) |

It depends. If your mother was French at the time of her birth, you are already considered automatically French. In which case you must apply for a Certificate of French citizenship at your local French Consulate. http://www.ambafrance-us.org/spip.php?article330
If that wasn't the case, ask your local German Consulate. It is my understanding that it works more or less the same way in Germany (which also uses the jus sanguini principle) so you might be German through your mother's citizenship. If you are or can become German then you are free to relocate in France or any other member country in the European Union. http://www.germany.info/Vertretung/usa/en/04__Legal/01__Consulate__Finder/__Consulate__Finder.html |

Your ancestry has no bearing on obtaining a passport or citizenship. |

I thought it had to be the father or grandfather going the farthest and either one would have to be 100% and born in that country. May be wrong.. |

don't think it's gonna help you much, but your best bet would be to check with the consulate nearest you. Get the straight information right from the bureaucrats. |
