Something that's special to that culture that you really can't get anywhere else. My sister brought me a christmas ornament from Paris and it is the most beautiful thing...something I couldn't ever get here...even though you can get ornaments (of course) nothing like the one from Paris.
What do you like to do??
Cook?? Have him bring you back something they use for cooking their cultures food.
Read?? Bring back magazines or books by an author from that country.
Movie/Music Buff?? Bring back movies or music from that country that you wouldn't get here.
Arts?? Bring back some art or decorator item by an artist from that country.

In france it's interesting to bring with you what doesn't exist here ( good wine, good cheese , and good food in general) and if you like fashion ask him to stop in Les champs elizees of paris ( louis vuitton, dior, chanel if he is rich , secondhand clothes if he is poor , there is a lot of vintage things here) .
In spain, you can ask him to bring you good spicy food AND THIS SPECIAL DRINK YOU CANT FIND HERE CALLED ''ORXATA''!!!!
