A gift basket with items from your area or state. Ex. I live in Iowa so I would put things in the basket made from corn or something similar. |

Something that exists only in America. (bringing camembert would be pointless).
You can make an asortment of items.
A photo book of your area is also a good idea.
A tee shirt from your favorite team (fotball/baseball/hockey/etc.)
And maybe Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. That doesn't exist at all in France! |

A picture book of your region is nice. Food items are a good idea but packing them might be a problem. Macademia nut gifts are good. They're not into peanuts so be warned but the Macademia nuts seem to go over well.
I have had great luck with See's candies. I'm from San Francisco so this works well. They're amazed that we do actually have good chocolate in the States!
Kitchen stuff, depending on what, might work too. I'm talking nice, practical things. Go to a department store and look at some of the novelty, unusal items like lemon sqeezers, microwave covers, grapefruit spoons, fancy garlic presses, etc. Battery operated is fine but nothing electrical. Nothing large (kitchens are usually smaller). The peelers here are awful. Get one with a swivel head that is easy to use. Boy was my neighbor happy with that gift!
Make sure the packaging looks nice. The French are into presentation.
Good luck and happy shopping! |

Uniquely American foods are sometimes appropriate - like a package of wild rice, a container of boiled Virginia peanuts, or some American wild game. I still send a gift with these items in it to a German family I stayed with more than 20 years ago, every year around the holidays.
Thanks for the deuce. |

For my exchange to France, it was recommended that I take a book or calender on Australia (I live there), because the apparently like stuff like that (photos etc.).
I was also told to take a small photo album of my family, home, school etc. to show them, it wasn't a gift. |
