If you stick with jeans and sweaters, you will be perfectly dressed for daytime and for casual evenings. For slightly more dressy evenings out, a pair of dark dress pants, a blouse or thin sweater, and a jacket will be fine. I'm not suggesting a suit kind of look, by the way; I just mean that you'll need a jacket for warmth because it's kind of chilly at night. If you're going to a club, you might wear a skimpier blouse and a heavier jacket/coat...
An alternative for daytime is to wear tights with a short skirt and ballet flats or flat ankle boots. Pair that with a sweater or a shirt & a casual jacket, and you will be right in style based on what I saw when I was in Paris a few weeks ago.
Rillifane is right about colors - I noticed that my clothes were much more colorful than what other people were wearing and what was available in the stores. If you want to blend in a bit, then stick with dark, muted colors for the most part. Throw a colorful scarf around your neck to give uniqueness and life to your outfit. |

Wear what you will be comfortable in and give due consideration to fact that, as a tourist (I'm assuming you're going for a vacation...excuse me if I am wrong)), you will be doing a lot of walking.
Proper walking shoes, preferably water resistant, with solid arch support are a must. That last thing you need are blistered, aching feet.
Other than that you need have few concerns. Clothing in France is not all that different than clothing any western country.
However, the French tend to be more muted in their selection of colors so leave the very bright or very loud and pack dark or muted colors.
French women do have a great sense of style. Its not so much that their clothing is different but rather that they put it all together so well. My wife, who was a women's wear buyer for a major retail chain in the USA always said that, no matter how elegantly or expensively she dressed, she always felt that she was being outdone in Paris. |

It's not that everyone is dressed-up in Paris, but it seems that everyone there is fashionable without trying. Don't wear sneakers except for athletic activities, or any shirt with corporate logos -- they are immediate tipoffs that you're not European.
For daytime, if you are sightseeing, I recommend fitted jeans, a sweater or blouse, and a good pair of walking shoes. After you get to Paris, you can pick up a scarf for yourself. For the daytime, the goal is to look casual and relaxed, but stylish.
For dinner and nightlife, be dressier. I recommend wearing stiletto heels, and maybe a cocktail dress, skirt, or darker-colored pants, depending on your tastes. I attached a website describing three clothing stores in Paris that you can go to if you decide that you need something new. Regardless of what others say, you can dress like a Parisian.
Do not overdo the makeup -- the French view excessive makeup as the sign of an old woman or a prostitute. French women spend a lot of money to perfect their skin so that they don't need much makeup. A lot of women get manicures, but stick with a single muted color for polish. If you're interested in really looking like a Frenchwoman, I also attached a list of hair / nail salons in Paris. |

Don't listen to them (except to Miss Lollipop's)! Paris people, like French people, dress like U! they are human being and dress like anybody else in a western country. You can wear anything even bright colors, even red shirt with one red sock and one blue if u want!!!^^ everything is allowed and when you walk through Paris it's like anywhere else in the world and not a Fashion show !!! of course you can dress well but if you're not classy it's OK don't worry!! Though, it's cold right now in France so take warm clothes and take a rain coat just in case. Don't take only Converse but also shoes that allows u to go out in the rain!^^ (I experienced the Converses-in-the-rain too!). Don't worry about your appearance for everyday life in Paris be yourself!. Just take nice clothes if u plan to go out at night... and over all: ENJOY PARIS! and don't bother with those details... really, French people won't laugh at you because you wear teared jeans!!^^ and WELCOME TO FRANCE |
