It ranks as the 10th most expensive city in the world to live in. New York is more expensive. I haven't lived there - only visited, but it's a delightful place. Look here for relative cost:

You will surely need more than 1500 Euro per month only for food, accommodation and pubic transport. In and around Paris there are many totally different places. I'm sure, you will find one, where you like to live. Unfortunately, nice, new and clean places are expensive.

The cost of living is very high in Paris. It is the one and only disadvantage to living there.

And yes, it's a wonderful place to live. It lives up to its reputation.

To live in Paris, you'll need at least 2000 euro a month or more after taxes. You need about twice that to live with any real degree of comfort.

Paris is a wonderful city, I myself stayed there for a month this past summer and the night scene for young people( 20-30) was simply unparalleled. On the topic of coast Paris can be pricy but just like anywhere else if your smart you can get by on a modest income. The main trick I picked up was… live like a local. It’s as simple as it sounds, instead of eating out purchase your food at the local markets, instead of buying your clothing in boutiques explore a little and find the deals, if you feel compelled to explore the city use public transit and if you’d like to take in the culture do your research because there are lots of free or low cost concerts and museum tours all the time. An example of this is that the Louvre is open for you to explore once a month (first Sunday I believe) completely free of charge!
So yes Paris is quite expensive but as long as you watch your money and stay smart you’ll be fine.
Good luck and I hope you choose to work and study there :)

Paris is incredibly expensive from an American viewpoint. It's much more expensive than the other large cities in France. Lyon and Bordeaux are my favorite large cities in France. Just a tip--if you're planning on coming here to learn French, then do NOT live/study in Paris as too many Parisians speak English.
