How much you spend really depends on what type of lifestyle you want to have. To go cheap, you could buy food in the supermarket and subsist on pork/cheese/butter/baguette sandwiches, and take the metro everywhere. Or, you could eat all your meals out, and take taxis everywhere.
I went for a week 2 years ago, and it cost me about $50/day per person, not including hotel room, to enjoy paris. I bought my breakfast from a local bakery, my dinners were "el cheapo" kind, and I went out for lunch almost every day. I walked alot, rode the Metro for long distances, and took taxis late at night. I also paid for about $10 worth of entrances a day.... that came to an average of $50/day for my trip.
You should likely know your hotel cost before going, so I didn't include that in the calculation.
Just as a tip: the least expensive, convenient way to get from Charles de Gaulle airport is the "Air France" bus. It goes directly from the airport to "palais des congres" and then to "L'arche de Triomphe". Both of those stops are metro hubs. It costs about $10, if I recall correctly.
Now, if you know the answer to my question: how do you get cheap airfare to Paris: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=1006031905864, that would make me happy! I need to go again ;-) |

I think "Estelle W" has a pretty good answer. Another way to save money, especially if you arrive after Monday and leave before Sunday the same week - buy a weekly (hebdomadaire) "carte orange". For 15.70 Euros (zones 1-2 - Paris) you can travel inside Paris for the entire week. If you plan going to Versailles, Fontainebleau and Disneyland Paris, you might consider buying carte orange for zones 1-6 (Paris and suburbs) for 34.8 Euros (and it's valid for travel to/from airports too!). Without Fontainebleau zones 1-5 should be enough. The disadvantage is that this cart works from Monday to Sunday. If you arrive on a weekend, you'll need two cards. Also, you'll need a small photo to glue it on the card.
The funny thing is that RATP (Paris transportation authority) website has information about carte orange only on its French version - www.ratp.fr, but not on the anglophone version.
Another little secret - tips at the restaurants are already included (and prices usually include all taxes, so you pay what you see on a price sticker), so you don't give a waiter more than 1-2 euros (well, you may leave 5, if you want to be generous). |
