Don Adriano has given you the most direct route.
If you have a little more time and would like a more scenic view of the tower, then I suggest taking RER B to Denfert-Rochereau, transfering to Metro ligne 6 direction Charles de Gaulle-Etoile, and getting off at Trocadero. It's incredible to see the tower growing larger and larger as you approach it!
You can get a map of the transit system by going to www.ratp.fr. Click on the British flag at the top right hand side of the screen to get an English version. |

Perhaps jamand is thinking of Gare Saint-Lazare, because the Eiffel Tower is quite a bit more than a 15 minute walk from the Gare du Nord.
The simplest train route from Gare du Nord to the Eiffel Tower is as follows:
Take RER B in the direction of Robinson or Saint-Remy-les-Chevreuses to the station Saint-Michel-Notre-Dame. Change to RER C in the direction of Champ de Mars/Tour Eiffel to the station Champ de Mars/Tour Eiffel
You're inside the city the whole time, so you can use regular Metro tickets on the RER trains. It should take 40-45 minutes. |

You shouldn't worry about planning your subway connections from the States ! The metro network is very, very dense. Usually from one area, you can get to another with one conection, sometimes two.
You'll get a subway map on arrival, and then you'll be able to improvise. parisians like me know little tricks that'll save you two minutes here, 30 seconds there in the corridors, but you're not a commuter !
Just be sure at one point to take the line 6 (ligne aérienne ie not underground) and go from Bir-Hakeim to Passy Station or vice-versa, you'll have a splendid view of the Eiffel Tower from the river Seine.
Anyway, if you really want to plan all your routes in advance, here is the link to the map :

The route you want t make is not that easy, actually. Adriano has the most direct one, but I would not recommand RER D, it's slow and unfrequent. What I would do is take RER B to Chatelet, connect there to RER A until Charles de gaulle, and there take the metro 6 line. Stop at Trocadero, it's on the opposite side of the river, but it's a much better approach, as you see it from above. Enjoy !
(on other trips try to avoid RER. It's fast (except the D), but no charm at all (to say the least)).

I don't know when you're going but it's now freezing cold and more or less snowing (but thje snow won't hold). |

Better off walking from Gare du Nord. About 15 mins walk.
Out of Gare du Nord main Entrance area - with station behind you - look straight ahead - Rue de la Poisson (or something like that) - walk down to bottom and cross river - turn left and walk |

From Gare du Nord take the Orange (line 5) one stop toward Place d'Italie to the Gare de l'Est station.
From Gare de l'Est take the Pink (line 7) 5 stops toward Villejuif - Louis Aragon to the Opera station.
From Opera take the Light Purple (line 8) 5 stops toward Balard to the Ecole Militaire station.
Voila! |
