Paris for New Year?? |
My boyfriend and I are going to Paris for New Year, 30 December to January 3rd, we're staying in arrondissement No.11.
We'd like to go to the Champs Elysees for the midnight "party" on the 31st - will we be stranded after the festivities or is the area we're staying in within walking distance - I presume public transport will stop?
Will Paris (like Scotland, where I'm from), have a complete shut down of all shops, attractions, transport etc on 1st January?
And finally, I'd really appreciate any suggestions for Paris on a budget..!!
Many thanks..... |

Well its quite a long hike from the Champs to anywhere in the 11th but at least you would be walking thru some pleasant surroundings.
But never fear, you can take Noctilien (Night Bus) #11 marked "Direction : Chateau de Vincennes-Metro" to the 11th arrondissement. (If I knew your exact destination I could give you more precise directions) I suspect the buses will be crowded but I believe they will be running.
Tourism is a major business in Paris and there are always some places that will be open on major holidays. The transport system will continue to function although on a reduced schedule.
One hint for keeping to a budget is to eat and drink as the French do.
The French breakfast very lightly on just coffee or chocolate with a piece of bread or a roll. A typical British fry up can be found but it's relatively expensive. The French eat their evening meal quite late by British standards. If you look for a place serving dinner at 6 PM and find it then you've likely found a place that caters to tourists and is overpriced.
Every place serving food is required by French law to post its prices in a place they may be viewed from the street. Take the time to study these prices before even entering a place. This also give you a chance to figure out what you want to eat and avoid the mistake of ordering too quickly and too much once seated.
In France the term "menu" or "formula" usually denotes a specially priced meal deal that is usually good value. (The English term "menu" is "carte" in French). Take your time about choosing where to eat. there is a vast array and a very wide price range available. (If you want specific reccomendations for restaurants then tell me where you will be staying).
When it comes to drink (including non-alcoholic dirnks) , you'll find prices tend to be much higher than back home. The French habit is to buy one drink and linger over it. Establishments therefore factor in the low turnover when pricing drinks. Paris is therefore not a place to go if heavy drinking is an important part of your socializing. |

Bonjour Melinka,
ça va ?
( doing fine ?)
My name is Frederic, i'm fench, living in Paris and teaching french. Rose t and Rillifan are right : 11th district is not so close to Champs-Elysées.
which means you will have to walk.
Nevertheless, I confirm you have Noctilien buses which means you can cross Paris very easily the night.
Furthermore, I confirm shops are closed on January the first.
we don't work !
:-)
vive Paris
Bonne Année !
Happy New Year to You

The Champs Elysees is basically on the opposite side of the city from the 11th. You'll need to plan to take public transportation. Fortunately for you, the metro should run all night instead of shutting down around 1 am. At least, it ran all night last year!
If your hotel offers free breakfast with your room, then make sure to take advantage of it. At lunchtime, go to a bakery and get sandwiches and bottled water. Then you can splurge a bit at dinner.
If you speak French, take two passport-sized photos with you. You should be able to buy a Carte Orange on Monday, which will allow you unlimited use of the metro and bus system inside Paris. You'll have to buy separate tickets for places farther away like Versailles or the airport.
My favorite things in to do in Paris are free: walking through parks, gardens, and neighborhoods and people watching.
The bottom line is that you don't have to spend a ton of money to have a good time in Paris. Economize when it makes sense, and treat yourself to a little splurge, too. |
