The weather is very similar to the northeast coast. Can be cold, rainy or snowing. When we were there a few years ago in February, it snow when we went to Versi (sorry, not sure how to spell it). But it was cool to cold. Dress in layers is the best you can do! Be sure your coat has inside zipper pockets, where you can keep you wallet and valuables. DO NOT keep you money in your pants pockets or in your purse or backpack.

Hi, I've been living here last two years and each winter was very different. The coldest time of year is usually after New Years but not always. It was horribly cold (hovering around freezing for a few days in mid-January 2 years ago. BUT, last winter was quite mild! It was cold but not too terribly (maybe around 45 F at the lowest). It can get very windy here in winter also.

My suggestions: good long wool scarve, good gloves, thicker pants or soft wool slacks (not jeans), and a hat of some kind (a pullover hat maybe), and a good wool long coat. People usually don't wear hats here but I do when its cold like that.

Layers are important as the temp can vary quite a bit during the day (especially if there's sunshine - which is usually abundant on the high-pressue very cold days).

Also, layers are important to deal with the metro. In the winter, the metro (depending on the line) can get actually pretty warm (if not hot) during the winter, so good to be able to remove a layer or two while in the metro!

Be prepared for rain as well. though rain is more common in the spring and fall it's possible to have some rain in the winter. So, an umbrella, possibly a light rain jacket?

As you have mentioned layers is the trick. Plus, you will probably get in/out of heated buildings and you want to accomodate different temperatures

A good overcoat that also covers your legs or strong coat with wool trousers + a good (warm /thin) underwear vest + a shirt / tshirt + wool jumper (if you are a woman twin sets are also good options) + wool scarf + gloves. If you get really cold you can also take a hat. If it gets too warm you can take off one of these items (vest , jumper) and easily take the ligther pieces around

I get by with this in the winter - a blended wool cashmere coat, a ligther wool jacket and a shirt / light jumper but I don't really get cold easilly as long as I keep my hands and feet covered.

I visited Paris one winter-- New Year's to be exact. And the weather was similar to what I experience here in NJ. Chilly, but it wasn't snowing when I was there.
Definitly have a good winter coat, with room to put layers (ie sweater, thermal) on underneath, or enough room to do without layers.
BOOTS! Personally, my Ugg Boots worked fine, but people these days are so Anti-Uggs, so I don't know how you feel about those... but definitly any type of boots! Your feet WILL get cold! (don't forget some nice, warm, thick socks too!)
Scarves, hats, mittens- the usual winter attire. I don't remember one day during that winter excursion that I didn't have my scarf on me, it's definitly an essential!

I went there in early feb.....I found it cool without being cold.
I got by with jeans and a pair of trousers, scarf, gloves and a thin (single layer) jacket over a long sleeved top and singlet (or whatever you call a vest/undergarment)....I do not get as cold as some people so it depends on how much you feel the cold too!! I would suggest a hat too and a warmer jacket in case it turns really cold.......you can escape to warmer places on those really cold days, but walking around all day does help you keep warm as well.
I would suggest a few layers to wear...I personally didn't care about what I looked like, I just had my clothes and wore them...even tho I did have some clothes that I could dress up or down if needed.
