I've lived in both. I also speak English and French.
Hated N.Y. Loved Paris.
Safer, cleaner and better if you're single in Paris, especially for women. More culture, better weather and more to do in Paris.
N.Y. has its good points, but fewer than Paris does. I also could afford a better apartment in a nice neighborhood without having to share (I didn't earn a lot) and found that I could go out for the evening, dinner, drinks, entertainment & perhaps a cab home, without parting with as much cash.
I like to walk. I could in Paris. In N.Y., I had to be careful when, where, etc. It's not like everywhere is safe in Paris but honestly, the dodgy areas were fewer and easier to avoid.
You don't need a car in either. In fact, it's better without but the public transport is much, much better in Paris and doesn't smell as nasty!
Just a word of warning, if you move to Paris, expect and be ready for visitors! They will come...
I would only recommend Manhattan if you're earning really big bucks. In Paris, I felt richer on my more meager salary, and that was nice... |

I love Paris! You can actually walk around after dark without fearing for your life. You don't need a car in Paris because of their excellent Metro system, plus they drive like crazy people. I try to get there al least every two years; my heart is in Paris. |

I've been to both and they are both beautiful towns with many benefits. Being French, I am a little biased and think that Paris is the better city to live in. As I'm sure you know, it's the town most outsiders think of when they think "France". It's also probably the most recognizable city in the world.
Both cities have beauty to them. For NYC, I found that beauty was found most often at night when all the skyscrapers are lit up in brilliant colours. In that sense, New York is pretty. But Paris just isn't that kind of city. Its beauty lies within its history and architecture (Notre Dame de Paris, Le Sacré Coeur, the Louvre, etc.).
Of course, France has the fastest and most efficient rail service in the world. From Paris you can easily access cities such as Chamonix and Nice. You're also in close proximity to other European countries.
My vote goes to Paris. |

Only stayed in NYC briefly been to paris a few times, are you from paris then?
Paris is smaller, probably more pleasant atmosphere.
NYC is a huge bustling, impersonal but exciting place.
Im guessing NYC will be the more multi-cultural of two. Its population is far far bigger. Its probably a question of whether your ready to leave Europe behind. The USA is a great place but there is so much to see in Europe. Id try and consider what your job prospects are in either city, also issues like healthcare, tax. But to be honest all that is boring, the best way would be to spend an extended period of time in either, say a month during the summer meet as many local people as possible and see what life is really like in either place.
Bear in mind if you live in Paris cities like London, Munich, Rome, Barcelona are not very far away. |

New York is dirty and has huge skyscrapers that give you no view of anything. Paris is beautiful and it's dripping with history. Live in Paris. |

NYC is okay, but I love Paris. It really depends on your personal preferences and ability to get a job. If you're European, you will be able to get a job in Paris without a lot of bureaucratic red tape. If you're not European, then there's a whole bunch of stuff to do to prepare for a job in Paris. There's a yahoo group called living in france or life in france (can't remember which) that you could join if you're leaning in that direction. |
