Relocating to France, top tips please!?

I have been to Normandy on a few holidays and loved the area. Any advice as to where would be a good place to live (with 2 young kids) ?

Is property better to rent or buy now that the £ is so weak?

WISE OWL
Since you are talking about the £, the logical deduction is that you propose to move from the UK. If you are a British citizen, then you will be let in as there is an agreement between nations within the EU to allow free movement of their nationals.
Normandy is indeed lovely, but how can one advise you without knowing what exactly you are looking for. You obviously have little idea of what this move would entail. You have children and therefore have to think of their education and welfare, so you have to settle in a place where there is a school and not too far from a city where they will have to go to secondary school eventually.
Most properties to be done up have been snapped up by Brits and other EU nationals, and now there is no longer such a thing as "cheap" properties in France. For instance there is a village in Périgord where almost all the houses have been bought by people fom Luxembourg who use them for their holidays or to retire.
The cost of living has escalated enormously and times in France are hard, with many small businesses closing down because they have gone bust. The number of unemployed people is enormous and jobs are hard to find. What will you live on? New comers are not entitled to state benefits or free medical care and those are even being witheld from some French nationals.

I have several friends who bought property in the outback of "la France profonde" running a B and B and/or gites. Fifteen years ago they made a reasonable living , now they are at their wits end. They cannot afford to buy a property back in Britain. Their children's future has been ruined. Those are now unemployed sixteen year old+ teenagers without decent qualifications and can find no work, and even if they do have qualifications there are so many applicants for jobs that they lose out to locals. Some disillusioned people have come back to Britain and abandonned the rural dream but as a result of their venture across the Channel are now living in conditions much worse than when they originally left .
You have not mentioned how good your French is and how you will overcome the language difficulties. Not everyone in France speaks English and some of the legal and commercial jargon is a nightmare for people who know only basic French, whether one buys or rents.

If you are American, it is very simple. Unless you have been offered a job by a French firm, or you are extremely wealthy and can prove it, you will not be allowed to settle in permanently by the immigration authorities.

Alençon is absolutely charming.

Check out the money changing and all that as the wise owl said and decide if you can live and make your living in a small town like place -
I'm guessing no so check out Lyon. I lived there, a good sized city with great transportation and more helpful people than not. suburbs, train station, museums, parks, France in general doesn't seem as kid friendly as England..

Without your nationality this question has no logical answer.

Why do you assume the French will let you in ?

France uses the Euro so the value of the £ is of no relevance.
