Descriptions like "cheap" or "trampy" are a little vague. Could you be more specific as to price range and what amenities you regard as vital?
Most inexpensive Parisian hotels lack amenities that many Americans consider vital to the preservation of human life i.e. ice machines, minibars, cable TV, and room service. So if by trampy you mean something that doesn't look like the Red Roof Inn in Des Moines Iowa you may have a problem. (Of course, France also has soulless, antiseptic, mass market motel chains and there are such places on the outskirts of Paris.)
Meals at the Jules Verne, the premier restaurant in the Eiffel tower, run about $150 per person. I think its overrated and overpriced. |

We stayed at Hotel des Grandes Ecoles in the Latin Quarter. It's near the Sorbonne and the Pantheon and of course the Metro.
We had lunch at Jules Verne in the Eiffel Tower. It was very expensive but we did avoid the very long lines that everyone else spends time in.
Look in Rick Steve's Paris and definitely download his mp3 audiotour for Versailles and wherever else you go. Bon Voyage! |

You can absolutely find cheap hotels just outside the city. I would recommend checking out BookMe dot com. You can compare ALL the reputable travel sites from one location, and save tons of money. Good luck! |
