For what it's worth, I crossed the Channel that way years ago and the trip was very uneventful. You'll be on a comfortable boat, with a very experienced captain and crew who know what they're doing. I predict that you'll quickly see there's nothing to be scared about and relax. |

Don't stress about it. All you have to do is come prepared with something to keep you busy (ipod, mp3, book, dvds, etc.) or maybe you can handle staying calm by just talking to your friends. If you have something to keep you busy, the less likely you are to think about it. Just try not to focus on the idea of your fear of boats. Plus, there not that bad, especially if you've never been on one don't automatically make that one of your fears, you may love it! Another piece of advice is to try not worry about your fear anytime before you get on the boat, because then you will be more and more likely to either back out of the trip or just get freaked out all together. Think of it as a fun upcoming experience rather than a scary one. I hope this advice helps.

The Dover-Calais trip is usually quite calm. I've never been on a particularly choppy sailing on that route.
If you're scared of the boat sinking, remember that SeaFrance and P&O have only seen one ship sink in the last 20 years between them. That sinking meant that they changed their safety procedures rapidly. So these days their safety records are spotless.
If you're still scared, sit away from the windows, and don't go outside, because you'll just end up scared.
Take travel-sickness tablets, and be calm about it.
The trip only lasts and hour and a half, and the time flies. |
