Marseille is the second largest city in France, industrial and not the most wonderful place to visit...
While in Nice you can visit Cannes, Monaco/Monte Carlo,
Grasse (center of the perfume industry), Saint Tropez, Antibes and other small towns along the coast...
If you want another large city to visit, go up to Lyon, where you have everything under the sun...
from very modern like the Part-Dieu shopping Mall
to the Vieux Saint Jean medieval quarter of the town and the 19th. century Basilica on Fourvière hill...next to the roman amphitheater and museum.
Then the center of town with its wonderful Opera house and City Hall, or the Croix Rousse with the silk makers workshops.
And the Parc de la Tête D'Or is beautiful.

OR nearer to the coast you have Aix-en-Provence, also a lovely town to visit...

BON VOYAGE!

Marseille is fine. I've stayed there a couple of times, and I've done 4 or 5 day visits. You can take a train from Nice, and there's really no reason to look for any other way to get there.

Get a hotel somewhere near le Vieux Port, perhaps off the Canabiere, which leads up towards the train station. I've stayed at the Tonic Hotel Vieux Port and the Hotel St Ferreol - both fine (I really preferred the Tonic Hotel).

If you go to Marseille, take a trip by train up to Aix-en-Provence - or perhaps stay there instead of Marseille. It's wonderful.
