immersion into the country. Only way to learn a language. Forget the crap you learn in school. academic teaching doesn't work for that. Just learn words by section : home, travels, restaurants, etc... basic words. Forget about verbs conjugation, it doesn't matter. it will come on time by itself. Remember also that most words have latin basis and a lot of them have same spelling. just the pronunciation differs. So when you do not know a name, say the english one with a french accent. it may work 30% of the time. Be relax and cool and you will rock

i learned french in school and spent a few months in france after, which really helped me. i kinda forgot a lot in the last few years, but now im back in france its starting to come back to me.
when i studied japanese on the other hand i just learned a few basics, then went to japan and realized a lot of grammar was missing, i wasnt able to express future or possibility etc...

so i think the best way is to get a really good grammar base, in a school or course etc.
then, when ur french is already ok, try to go to france. and stay away from english speakers! once you know a few its easy to stay in that circle and hardly ever speak french :p.
if u cant go to france, get a language exchange partner, meet up with them and their friends

it all depends on the person tho. one of my friends came to japan with no japanese and learned it pretty well within a few months just by speaking with his friends, and by reading a grammar book on the train...lucky him!

The best way is to go there and Live for as long as you can there and that way you will be forced to Learn to Survive Daily Life. Other then that take Language Courses, Alliance Francaise is the best but not the Cheapest, and Swot as much as you can.

Ok, I am brazilian but i lived in France once, so I think I can help you...

If you preffer studying alone you should try the Primsleur method! It is very good! It brings good audios for learning and practicing. You can store the audios in your iPod!

The best way, though, is to spend a season in France, and at same time attend to a French course. I suggest you the Aliance Française courses, which are spread all arround the globe, inccludding in France!

Bonne chance chérie!
