It would be a lot easier if you were in a hotel in the city. La Defense is a bit outside the city proper where all the fun stuff is. From there you can take the RER to get in. Please keep in mind that the RER stops running between 12:30 and 1 am, so plan on getting back by then unless you feel like dealing with their somewhat confusing night bus schedule.
One of my favorite walks there started at Cite (line 4) where Notre Dame is located (free to walk through, 6 euro to go up the towers) as well as Sainte-Chapelle and the Conciergerie where Marie Antoinette was held prisoner. From there, I crossed the Pont Neuf to the northern side of the Seine. From there the Louvre is only a short way away (7euro to enter) and the Jardin des Tuileries, then Place de Concorde. From there you can go directly up the Champs Elysees to the Arc de Triomphe OR (my preferred) cross the Pont Alexandre III (which is by the Grand Palais and Petit Palais) to see the Hotel des Invalides and the Musee de L'Armee. The Musee Rodin is nearby (on its western side. 7euro, I think.) From here, it's only a short way to the Eiffel Tower. You can do this pretty easily in three hours, and if you actually tour the sites, it could easily fill your day.
During the evening you can visit the Centre Pompadou, and on your first night, I would recommend going to Montmartre (Abbesses line 12) and walking around a bit. Go up to Sacre Coeur, the church at the top of the hill. You can get a stunning view of the city from its steps. From there you can go directly downhill to the Pigalle area where the Moulin Rouge is located. The Cafe de Deus Moulins (the cafe in which Amelie worked) is located in this area.
That should give you a pretty good tour of Paris for one night and one day. |

My first suggestion is to cancel your reservation in La Defense and get a hotel that is actually in Paris and, better still, in the center. For a low price (but utterly charming) hotel try my favorite, the Hotel St. Andre des Arts ( http://www.123france.com/en/0/hotel-saint-andre-des-arts-paris_486_en/index.html ) or for something a bit more plush try the Hotel Left Bank St. Germain ( http://www.paris-paris.com/hotel_left-bank_saint-germain.php ) |

Hello-Paris

You can do by yourself, but if you don't know, you will lost time.
In that case, you can buy a one-day-ticket : 5,60 euros.
http://www.ratp.fr/
From La Defense, you can take the bus 73. This bus will drive you along the Champs Elysées. You can go down if you want to walk and see some shops there.
If you stay in the bus until the end, you will arrive at Musée d'Orsay. Probably you won't have time to see it, otherwise you like paintings and it's really worth seing. About 2 or 3 hours.
And then you can go to see the others worth seing places :
- garden "Les Tuileries" in front of Le Louvre.
- Latin Quarter (Metro Saint Michel)
- Pompidou Center (Beaubourg) (métro Les Halles)
- Montmartre (Metro Abbesses)
- shops : Galerie Lafayette and Printemps (Metro Havre Caumartin and Chaussée d'Antin)
Or, you can take a tour :

Maybe easier ! |

Hi
Whenever I am in a city I have not been to before, I take one of those city bus tours that pass by all highlights and have earphones for commentary. They last 1,2-3 hours. With these tours you get a good feel for the city and get the "lay of the land". Then you can concentrate on one or two highlight sites to visit that interest you.
