Accoding to the article in a recent Paris Match, Sussanna Zetterberg, a 19 year old who had come to Paris to learn French, left her friends at a night club because she had to work the next day. When she didn't turn up, they called the police.

Apparently, she took an unlicensed cab. The article explained that in Sweden, cabs are very expensive and students take "unofficial" ones often. I have no idea if this is safe in Sweden but definitely not a good idea in Paris, nor in a lot of other big cities.

I have to admit, I have taken liberties in Paris I would have never considered in other cities. I walked home at night from the mГ©tro but I was in a nice, residential area of the 17th. I would have never done that when I lived in N.Y.

She was only 19, a good student and very pretty. This is a real tragedy but there are some lessons to be drawn from it. Sickos are everywhere. The trick is to not make yourself available to them.

Some "insert nationality here" are pedophiles. We live in a very sick world. I think we should have a system where people who abuse children are constantly tortured in various ways, I don't see whats so bad about that, we could have other inmates do it for free for a reduced sentence, the ones who did stupid things like steal cars and sell drugs...

There are similar problems in nearly every country in the world. Paris has an unusually low level of violent crime (inside the city) compared to other major world cities. While this student's death is a terrible tragedy, let's not over-react.
