To begin with, ignore idiots who suggest that you pretend to be a Canadian or anything other than what you are.

If you are American remember that electricity in France is 230 Volts, alternating at 50 cycles per second. If you travel to France with a device that does not accept 230 Volts at 50 Hertz, you will need a voltage converter. Plugs are also different and you may also need a plug converter.

Because air travel these days can make taking liquids and gels a hassle, it may actually be more convenient to leave some such things at home and buy what you need when you arrive.

In terms of clothing, the best advice is to travel light and not be overly concerned with being elegant or having a different outfit for every occassion. Something comfortable for sightseeing during the day with an emphasis on layering to deal with changeable weather and perhaps a "little black dress" for evening. Paris is a city where you wind up walking alot so good, solid, comfortable shoes are a must.

Take knowledge. Read any good guidebook, read several if you have the time, and understand what you want to see before you go. Paris is way too big and culturally rich to be seen in just ten days. You're going to have to pick and choose so be prepared.

Mainly, take and open mind, a spirit of adventure, and a resolve to be fearless in trying new things as they present themselves.

We love the foreigners, we are open to discover the other countries. But french peoples speak rarely english except in hostels or restaurants take a dictionary and to do signs. Never smiling in the subway it is impolite.

I really wish people would stop saying that the French hate Americans. It is not universally true!!!!! What they don't like is the stereotypical "ugly American" -- loud, obnoxious, insistent on everything being exactly the way it is in the US. They also think that our politicians are generally not very bright and don't make good decisions.

I've been to Paris 4 times in three years and have never been treated with anything less than courtesy. I rent apartments rather than staying in hotels, so I shop in markets and bakeries, just like locals do. At the bakery that I prefer in Beaubourg, the proprietor said that they don't get many Americans. I asked him and his wife to correct my French whenever I made a mistake, and they were happy to oblige and also to advise me on what baked goodies would go well with the dinner I had planned.

The waiter at my favorite cafe always teases me about one thing or another, and it is obviously not mean teasing either.

I have a French friend in Paris, and he is always welcoming and eager to help me make arrangements or give advice.

The key thing is that you treat everyone with courtesy and respect and remember that you're there not just to sight-see but also to learn about the culture. Be open minded.

bring one of those money holders that goes around your waist of your neck. This is a good way of keeping your money close to you. since there are a lot of pick pocketers. (this is what my family did when we went 2 years ago)

My tip is pretend you are canadian. Alot of the french people really dont like americans. I would suggest buying some sort of canadian flag pin or shirt or something and wearing it. I dont mean to be offensive or anything, its just what I have found when I lived there. Make sure you bring lots of film so you can take alot of pictures! I also suggest bringing a detailed map so you can find your way around. Mabye even a train schedual (The train is called the TGV) so you can go and see some other parts of France instead of just Paris. Have fun there!
