Travel to paris for cheap? |
I would like to surprise my husband with a trip to Paris next year, doesn't really matter when. I would like to stay 3 nights minimum. We will be flying out of Dallas Texas (DFW). Ive looked on expedia and all those other travel sites and get a median price of about 3,000 USD for flight and hotel. Anyone have any suggestions as to when would be a cheaper time of year or good deals. Also, how much would we need to have for spending money, just the basics of meals and a few souvenirs. |

The very cheapest airfares will be from November through February. The most expensive are in June, July and August. I usually go in March/April or September/October. Last year at this time I flew out of Tyler via Houston to Paris for about $800. Prices this year are higher (what isn't?)
Hotel rooms have a very wide range of prices. (I usually rent an apartment but then I usually stay for at least two weeks and often for a month at a time so this isn't practical for your purposes.)
My favorite little Hotel is the St. Andre des Arts ( http://www.123france.co.uk/en/0/hotel-saint-andre-des-arts-paris_486_en/index.html ) where doubles cost only 89 euros (about $135) breakfast and taxes included. Its in a great location and very friendly but you may find it a bit too simple (no elevator, no TV, no minibars etc).
For some place quite a bit more expensive but very romantic and with all the modern conveniences I suggest the Hotel Left Bank Saint Germain ( http://www.paris-paris.com/hotel_left-bank_saint-germain.php ) which is just around the corner form the St. Andre. Doubles there run from 160 to 280 euros a night. Its a very charming and romantic place, just the thing for a 3 day jaunt with hubby.
You can see that even at 280 euros a night you can get in under that $3000 figure you've mentioned.
Food also has a huge range of costs. At both the hotels I've named breakfast is included in the price. A nice little three course lunch with a glass of wine at a place along the rue Mouffetard in the 5th arrondissement (Latin Quarter) will cost 12-15 euros a person. A really quite splendad dinner at my favoreite restaurant, La Methode at 2 rue Descartes (5th) with a drink before dinner, three courses, a bottle of wine, and coffee afterwards will run 60 euros for two.
Of course it is easy to spend a lot more for food. The "tasting menu" at the Jules Verne restaurant in the Eiffel Tower, which many tourists go to, costs something like 120 euros per person.
Getting around Paris is easy and cheap using the Metro and bus system but walking is free and really the best way to see the city. Paris has a very temperate climate and even in the dead of winter is not terribly cold (although much colder than Dallas of course) but nothing like Chicago or other northern cities in the USA. |
