Travelling to South to France for first time, where should we go?

South of France is a vast zone !
I suppose you talk about south-east! (, because south west is also a very nice region.)
If you have enough time, you can move from Provence to Riviera (cote d'azur) wich are 2 very different regions !

Provence is not so crowded and cheaper .
Landscape is also not the same !
My suggestions : 1 stage in Provence ; you could stay in Avignon ( visit Avignon, Arles, Saint-Remy, l'Isle-sur-Sorgue, and the Luberon Valley -Cavaillon to Apt )

Then move East to the Riviera for a 2nd stage : the best place to stay is around Nice ; you have easy access to motorway and main roads even to the Alps nearby!
Visit St-Tropez, the Verdon Canyon, Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Cannes, Nice, Monte-Carlo, ...so many places around !)

I lived in Toulon for 2 years and I would say that you can't go wrong if you take pascalou's advice.
However if you want to be at the coast most of the time I would stay in Toulon when in Provence.

hi try visiting carcosanne castle or anywhere in the langdoc rousellin region its fab try traveling up into the mountains the views are fantastic the whole region is a gem espeicaly in the little villages if you can find a little place called lunas it's about 1.5 hrs from montpellier. this is a little village about 400 people live there all year round but in summer can get very busy theres a river that runs through it bars and restaurants a couple of hotels you can sit at the side of the river and watch the trout swim by, and in the warm evenings you can even see the bats catching flies above the lighting in the streets i worked there for 4weeks 6yrs ago and i will never forget it wherever you go you will have a great time.

Hi from France !

I live between Toulouse and Andorra, the PyrÃ©nÃ©es Moutains are beautiful around Andorra ( Foix, Tarascon, Ax les Thermes, Ussat les Bains etc...). This region is very not expensive !!
Also there is Biarritz ( Atlantic Cost) http://www.biarritz.fr , then French Riviera of course, but I think all the south is beautiful, really !!

Hello, I'll suggest to go from Marseille to Monte Carlo. On the way you'll find St. Tropez, Cannes, Nice and a lot of wonderful smaller resorts. I think you need about two weeks to see all the beauties and you can stay 3-4 days in Marseille (don't forget the d'If island), 3-4 days in Nice at the end of the trip and the rest on the road in these charming villages. From Nice you can do a one-day trip to Monte Carlo. Enjoy your trip! You'll see, it will be gorgeous!

You have to go on the French riviera, the department " Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur" For the city go to Monaco, Cap d'ail, Nice (specially the Old Nice), Cannes, St-Tropez
Then you can go to Aix-en-Provence. You have to see "calanques de marseille" (you can to see pictures on google search).

Then you go in the department of Languedoc-Roussillon and go to Nimes, Montpellier and Sete. Lots of events are organized during the summer, specialy in august.

The lesser known Languedoc-Rousillon is quieter and less expensive than the Eastern parts.

Its nice in Nice (pardon the pun), close to Monaco and Antibes, St Tropez not to far, Take your skis and ski Isola 2000. Don't forget the Nice Carnival in Feb and also Menton lemon fest same time. Not to far to visit Provence (Provence) excuse poor use of keyboard on flying visit to Switzerland. PS take lap top for playing DVDs s . French TV is rubbish.

get a map of the french riviera and plonk urself in the middle, have been to canne , not the best place to explore from would suggest nearer monaco

there is a small place between cannes and st tropez called Frejus/St Raphael.

It is absolutely beautiful and because it is not one of the 'main' areas not so expensive. It is only 1 hour from Nice by car and about 1.5 from Monaco. Cannes is 30 mins up the road and St Tropez about 1 hour but be aware that the road to St Tropez is very busy and it is a nightmare to park, our advice is to take the boat trip from Frejus.

Oh and by the way the weather in August is superb
