Versailles?

Going to paris in a bit and was wondering whats the best way to get to Versailles without getting a rent-a-car

The best thing is to take the RER C (train).

Take the Versailles pass-ticket:
train + access to everything in Versailles (All the rooms + Gardens + Audioguide + Trianons + Hameau de la Reine)

It cost 25€ the week-ends and around 20€ during the week. Very much worth it since the ticket in Versailles for everything costs 25€, so you save the price for the train. You can use all the RER/trains/Metro the whole day too.

Now in Versailles:
- arrive early (not after 10.30)
- do the King's rooms (you maybe can pass the other rooms in order to have more time)
- do the gardens
- walk to the Trianons and the Hameau they are wonderful, but we often don't have the time to go there.

Have a good time

Definitely no need to rent a car. People recommended taking the train, and I agree. Take the RER C to Versailles-Rive Gauche station. It's the closest one to the Palace (see link below). I'm also including an RER map. If you take the RER, you won't be taking it from Montparnasse, as per the aforementioned map.

It's only 30 mn from Gare Montparnasse. Go to the station, ask for Versailles at the ticket sales or chose it on the automatic machine.

Enjoy the wonderful Castle :-)

by train.. you can go by RER or SNCF but if using SNCF you can buy a combined ticket from the SNCF train station for both the train and chateau. it will cost you 19-25€ and you will have access to all parts of the chateau and avoid the ques. Otherwise you would have to pay for all areas separately which will cost you about 30€ or more.

Trains leave from Gare st Lazare and montparnasse train station amongst others.

by train is v convenient and not expensive.

As has already been said, the RER (urban commuter rail) has a station in Versailles. The Chateau itself is a ten minute walk from the station.

You may also take metro line 9 to Pont de Sevres. Walk upstairs and you'll see a bus stop. Take bus # 171 (you will need three metro tickets) and it will drop you off at the front gate. The bus back stops just across the street and down one block.

The bus trip will take 25-30 minutes.

Figuring one metro ticket to get to the bus stop and then 3 tickets for the bus, the entire transportation part will cost you only 8 metro tickets (4 each way).

If you buy your Metro tickets by the "carnet" (a book of ten tickets) the total cost of the trip will be a bit less than 10 euros.

the train...
