Was the original US statue of liberty sculpted from an african image?

Aline S
The sculptor was Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, Gustave Eiffel, the designer of the Eiffel Tower, and Eugene Viollet-le-Duc, engineered the internal supporting structure. Eiffel was responsible for the internal structural system and Viollet-le-Duc was responsible for the choice of copper in the statue's construction and adoption of the repousse technique.

You can see the first scale model that was made for the project on the side of the Seine, Paris, France.
It has been said that Eifel started putting peices of the statue together in his back yard but eventually had to find a better location so artisans and other colaborators would be have the necessary work room.

It is unknown. Many people believe that a woman called Charlotte Bartholdi (1801-1891) , the sculptor's Mother, was the model for the statue. Others think it was based on his early drawings for a never-commissioned statue in Egypt. .

I'm pretty sure fourtitudinou is right. The sculptor used his mother as the model for the Statue. If you look at her face, she is very European looking. She almost looks like a feminine version of Michaelangelo's David, with long, full cheeks, and a long straight nose. She's quite lovely in an old-fashioned way.

No, I forget the sculptor's name at the moment, but I'm pretty sure it begins with an "M".
The model he used for the statue was his mother. :) How sweet!
They were both French.
