Marks and Spencers often have better rates than the Post Office. They all make their money somehow, usually through twitched exchange rates but from experience M&S rip you off the least. Compare the beurau de change's rates with the real ones at http://www.xe.com but you'll never get that in a shop.

quma
travelex give a not bad rate if you pick it up at the airport

I am assuming you want it legal, right ?

Can you sing or play a musical instrument ? I always go in for a spot of busking when the funds are running low. Best returns are with "where do you go to my lovely" if in France, or in Germany either "durham town" or "streets of london" will net you satisfactory euro coinage.

If this fails, you could anyway pawnbroker your guitar to raise additional euros.

If you are a student and can prove it, then you could also consider to open a current account in your european destination of choice with a free overdraft facility. That should be good for an easy pony at least.

Dont just look for free charges as they tend to give a poor exchange rate. M & S and the Post Office are usually pretty good

Post Office or Thompson Travel shops.

alan
the post office a lot of companies change money for free but you pay on the exchange rate

Go to HSBC Bank. They have the lowest charges or no charges to exchange currency to euros.

Airport Currency Exchanges charge like crazy.

All changers will charge, if they say "no service charge" or similar, you will find that they lower the exchange rate, No one can afford to give a free service,
One of the best rates is through Marks and Spencer.

It will be difficult to not pay any type of extra charges when exchanging money...however if you can double check with your bank about ATM's.

I travel to Paris at least twice a year, and I always grab some Euros from the ATM when I arrive at the airport in Paris.

If I need more, I have found plenty of Bancs and ATM's in which I can access my cash in EUROS!!!

It's much easier than it has ever been in the past.
