Personally i think Lille is fantastic. It's quite small or at least the centre is but there is loads to do and it is very beautiful. It is a lot cheaper than Paris but you still get the good food, shopping and atmosphere, some great exhibitions (if you like that sort of thing, which i do). We went for New Years one year and had a ball and have been back many times.
