What's a good area of Paris to stay in?

I don't really want to stay anywhere expensive, but I want to be in an area that's both safe and reasonably interesting. What are some good neighborhoods to look for?

I'd recommend the Latin Quarter or Les Halles, something in the center of Paris. That way you can get to everything very easily. Many tourists stay in Montmartre, but transportation to different things to visit is difficult from there.

The best area I like to stay in Paris is close to Champs Elysees. Hotels closer to Arc De Triomphe were cheaper in prices when we went there

We always stay in the Latin Quarter--it's near the university, cheap and convenient to everything else, thanks to the Metro. It's very safe there. There are cheaper areas, but they aren't safe.

It's got a dumb name, but the Hotel California has always treated us well and has a good price range. Also, for an upscale night, the Hotel Claude Bernard is great.

If you are looking for the area where you can find the most activity at night, you should stay in Quartier Latin.

I would avoid places that have night-time partying, such as Montmartre, Metros: Pigalle/Clichy/Blanche and Les Halles/Marais. If for no other reason, they are much louder and busier.

The 5th and 6th arrs. are quite sane, as are many others. If you don't mind being out of town, consider Versailles. When I first arrived, I once stayed near the Jardin de Plantes and Univ.Paris Jussieu. It was close to the river and everything else. It was easy to walk around and to catch the metro -- even the BatoBus (boat).
