AVIGNON

Take a look at the pictures in the links below and you will just love it.

A nice city in the middle of Provence, known for quite a few things:

- The Palace of the popes

- The "Pont d'Avignon" The bridge that inspired the famous French song of the same name.

- The "festival d'Avignon" Which lasts 3 weeks in July, its is for theatric plays for Avignon what the movie festival is for Cannes. Lesser known than its counterpart, but street plays and comedies, clowns, jugglers and other street performers make the city an amazing attraction.

- The special wine. One of the popes liked a wine soo much he bought the territory near orange 45 mins car from avignon) making Avignon the only city with an enclave (territory not adjacent to the city) also, the palace grows a very small vineyard of this wine on the palace cliffs and each year there is a celebration for the papal wine. Until the revolution the territory belonged to the pope, just like the Vatican!

You also have the University (ancient hospital) which was dubbed one of the most beautiful in France and inaugurated by Chirac, and many other historical artifacts and stories.

The entire city center is enclosed in a 5km long city wall, and the "papal gardens are unique, they are on a cliff above the river, the city and the palace itself, offering a round the clock view on the whole city.

There are many things to do, and it is close to many other cities such as Montpellier, Aix en Provence, Nimes (the famous "lets let the bulls loose in the street thing"), Marseilles, Cannes, Lyon... just an hour away from Italy and 2 away from Spain (Barcelona) Is situated in Provence which is, ma foi, on of the most sought after locations to live in.

My gf's parents absolutely love Nice (pronounced Neece). They have been a bunch of times on holiday.

Montpellier for the sun and the sea, Nîmes for the roman architecture(Romans used to call Nîmes "the second Roma"), Bayonne near Biarritz (pays Basque, food), Clermont Ferrand : an important historical place.

You have to travel accross the country and see all the little towns and géographie. Welcome!!!

Consider Aix en Provence. Its an ancient city which is a major college town these days.

Check out their website:http://www.aixenprovencetourism.com/uk/aix-accueil.htm

Although there are any number of them, large cities other than Paris which I've personally had the chance to visit and enjoy include Bordeaux, Dijon, Lille, Montpellier, and Reims. Of those five cities, I think I liked Montpellier the most but they all have their charm and appeal. Needless to say, more touristy places that I haven't been too yet must be great too: Nice, Biarritz, etc...

Try Dole and Lyon. Dole is a small city historic for Dr. Loui Pasture. Very good wines and a river you can walk along
There is about three hour drive from Dole to Lyon.
The Franch coast line is also amazing it all depends on how you are going to travel by train or car

I like Marseille a busy port in the south of France

Almost all cities in France are nice to visit. Each one has a unique feature, a product, a place or history to boast of. Recommended places to see: Mont Saint Michel in Normandy, Rouen, Giverny, Deauville, Saint Malo, Nantes, Rennes, Versailles of course, Toulouse, Le Baule, Reims, Loire Valley, Marseille, Lyon, Nice Bordeaux, Avignon, Lille, Amiens and a lot more.
