What's it like in France?

What's it like in France? I've never been there and always wanted to go. I'm taking French right now and by the time I'm a senior I should be fluent.

We visited France last year thinking a couple of weeks would do it. We spent a good 2 months there. Didn't go to Paris this time because we found out that France had so much more than the Eiffel Tower.

The French Riviera side is great, although touristy, lots of camping grounds along the coast to choose from. The Dordogne area is really fantastic, with beautiful villages putting you back in time, prehistoric caves, grand mountains, walks, fantastic views, quaint places to visit, awesome food, wonderful hospitality (just say "Parlez vous Anglaise" and they will love that you have tried to speak their language - most talk straight back in English if they know it).

The West Coast was a surprise, especially with Pyla Sur Mer - the huge sand dunes, once again the quaint villages, the beaches, plenty of activities here, great camping grounds, entertainment, food, culture.

Then we went to the East Coast bordering on Switzerland - this was pure magic - the mountains, the villages, the people, the food - I could go on forever about this magical country. No wonder the French don't travel much - they have everything in their own country.

We were told the French only liked to speak French - utter crap - they will appear that way if you don't try to speak at least some of their language. Let's face it, if they came to our home country, would we speak their language? I doubt it - most don't know it. So wherever that statement came from, it was probably someone ignorant.

The food in France is to die for - go on a diet before coming, you will not be able to resist anything!!!! The place is a walking smell heaven.

Most of all - have fun.

France is a beautiful country. Everything about it is beautiful whether you are in the busy streets of Paris, or cruising in the countryside, or driving along the coast. There is so much to see and do that the possibilities are endless! The French people can be quite rude sometimes. I've almost always had a bad experience with the waiters. Speaking of waiters, the food in France isn't special either. Tried a couple "French cuisines" and they were nothing to write home about. My friends and I always tried to just find a good Italian or Chinese place. =P

Anyway, France is a great place to visit and spend some time in. Knowing French will really help you especially when you are out of the big cities. I highly suggest that you go there if you ever get the chance.

Like the US, France is diverse both geographically and culturally. For many years, France was the hub of civilization - check your passport - it's written in English and FRENCH!

In Paris, you will be struck by the sheer beauty of the architecture and planning. Wide boulevards...amazing buildings and wonderful public places. You will be able to see many of the world's greatest pieces or Art and some of the most recognizable monuments on the planet.

The people are not rude as some people might have you think...I've found them to be private and tolerant.

In other parts of the country, you can find mountains, seaside beauty, farmland, etc.

It's one of the most beautiful places in the world - well worth your language and travel investment.

Your question requires more specifics - are you talking abou the people, places, shopping or weather?

Bon voyage!

Espectacularrrrr!
It just feels great to live in France. We have a rich cultural life and history, there are lots of beautiful natural sites... All this makes France has an incredible tourist heritage. If you have any specific question about it, just ask : jmmessiac@yahoo.fr

France is a beautiful country with many extremes - lofty mountains with châteaux to rolling lavender fields. Their cities are often beautiful; Paris, Nice, Lyon to name but a few (often much more beautiful than cities here in Britain - most French cities escaped considerable damage in WWII).

However, not everything is wonderful in French. Their road signs aren't always clear, and some of the outskirts to major cities are frightening, with massive unemployment (up to 50%). Also, watch out for the dog mess; the French don't seem to clear up after their pets; and this is from personal experience.

Most French people are nice, but Parisians have a bad reputation, even in France. Also, knowing French goes a long way; they'll appreciate it (for once the waiter in the restaurant won't hear "l'addition" pronounced "laddishion" by English-speaking tourists).
