If you're alone, go by train. If with a group, renting a car may be cheaper, especially if you stay off the highway (autoroute) with its expensive tolls. But if you have time you want to use back roads anyway so has to see the country better.
While you're there, there is this amazing little old church with the most beautiful modern stained glass windows. The old ones were destroyed during the war. Unfortunately I can't tell you the name of it as it was over 25 years ago and I just don't remember but I would think a guidebook would list it. And don't forget Mont Saint Michel in the area!

i live in france at the moment and the public transport is very very good but also quite expensive, it would be cheapest for you to drive, second choice would be train, try sncf.com (i would take the train as the scenery is beautiful and the french drivers are maniacs!)
