A bit south of Bordeaux is a beautiful town called Biscarrosse. I went there a few years back and the beaches are beautiful and there's a nice market and little town centre. It's not a very big town and it seemed more a place for French people on summer vacation then a big tourist spot. They have hotels but also camping close to the beach if you have a tent or RV.

From Le Verdon sur Mer at the mouth of the Gironde to the town of Hendaye on the French Spanish border ( 190 miles )are the best beaches in Europe, a good place to stay is Mimizan Plage which is almost Central.

You have to see "La dune du Pila", 45 minutes by car from Bordeaux.
It's the highest dune in Europe i think, or at least in France :)

Bairritz is one of the beautiful beach towns along France's Atlantic coast. It is a large town with big sandy beaches and a good surf. St Jean de Luz is an incredibly lovely old Basque town, it is just a 20 minutes drive from Bairritz. It has a stunning Basque houses and fine sand. La Rochelle is also a nice port town on the Atlantic coast. It is one of the best seaside resorts in France. La Baules is an 8 mile crescent beach along the Atlantic coast at Brittany.
