If I were in you I'd start with Paris, then the Alps (Chamonix is so beautiful) and then again the French Riviera (Nice and Cannes). Paris is so gorgeous, I wish I could visit at least once a year. If you're looking for a hotel in Paris you can go to Scoobit.com, the hotel search engine at http://www.scoobit.com switch the language to English, then fill the form with city name (Paris) and click on "Search hotel". We went to the first hotel on the right (in the first row): nice and clean place, loving it, but feel free to choose the hotel that best fits your needs. Scoobit.com is a safe website I've used many times so far, and you can book on line. Chamonix sits in the shadow of Mont Blanc and offers some of the most challenging skiing in Europe. The town is in the centre of a string of villages spread out along a valley cutting deep through the Alps. I went to Chamonix too, same website as before, again we went to the first hotel on the right (in the first row). And finally the French Riviera. You have to visit both Nice and Cannes. And please add a couple of days in Monaco Montecarlo too. If you can. The French Riviera has one of the world's most pleasant climates. Weather is rarely bad. Winter temperatures range from 10°C to 15°C during the day, usually warm enough to lunch outdoors under the noon sunshine in little more than a T-shirt, even in February. It's gonna be the holiday of a lifetime, as far as I'm concerned.

If I ever got to go to France, I'd go to all the routes of the big bicycle race, the Tour de France. I see the race every year on tv and wish oh so much to go to the race and see all the stages, especially the mountain stages, and all the scenery along the way, including the old cathedrals and the simple little towns and villages along the way. God Bless you.

If you are able, you should visit Lyon. I have been living here for 10 years and it is a great place to visit. It has some of the best restaurants in France notably Paul Bocuse as well as many bouchons (which are small restaurants that serve typically Lyonnais food) There is old Lyon which is registered as a Unesco site. Beautiful neighborhood. Plenty of churches to visit as well as museums notably the Roman-Gallo museum. The area around Lyon (the beaujolais) is nice to visit also. Lyon is only a 2 hour train ride from Paris and is on the way to the south of France. It is also only 2-3 hours away from the Alps. The people are also pretty friendly.

I'd say Paris, the Alps (Chamonix, lac Léman,...) and the Riviera. Champagne area is boring (according to me).

By visiting those 3 regions you could experience a city, a mountain area and the sea.

Have fun

France is a very large country geographically and it contains many different physical features, climate types and cultural variations.. It depends what you are interested in, where you are starting from, how you intend to travel and how long you have. Champagne is boring ? What about Reims, the reminders of the first world war and what about the great champagne houses?

There is so much to see in France that it's impossible to know where to start.

You don't say how much time you'll have, or what your interests are. So it might be an idea to get a guidebook to France and work out an itinerary based on what interests you.
