What are the catacombs like in Paris, and are children able to go inside?

Sorry but I visited yet 3 times the catacombs, and I find that very interesting, kind of amazing, very well kept and in good conditions.

Just do it, this is something finally different from any museum in the world.

Your children will love it, except if thet are really too cowardly.

They are actually quite fascinating. They're not gruesome, as one would expect-the walls are the fossilized skeletons and there are many quotes and epitaphs in French.

I took students on tours of the catacombs twice-they loved it.

Bring a flashlight so you may see the writing on the walls.

It's a very macabre outing...but interesting, nonetheless. You go down a long spiral stair case under the city. It is dark and there are some lights, but it is recommended to bring your own little flashlight.

Do some research on the history of the Catacombs so you can enlighten your children as you make your way through the paths of neatly stacked bones. There are signs designating what cemetery they are from and the year they were interred in the underground city.

It's interesting...much better than the Sewer Tour, in my humble opinion. *g* No flash photos are allowed. Though there were a few people who went ahead and flashed away.

As you leave, your bags are checked for any "souvenirs." You'll exit a few blocks or so from where you entered. There are actually some really good pasty shops in the area.

Hi! that's great and children will love it.
It's amazing and interresting and you'll learn a lot about the city history, more than 2.000 years of history are here, so don't hesitate and go to visit them!

you can only go into a small part of them on place denfert rochereau, the rest are restricted and unless you've got a "guide" they're not recommended for anyone. but the "official" catacombs are cool... be aware it's a long climb up and down the steps.

bad idea

They are burial grounds. I think it is possible to go in them, but I wouldn't recommend it for kids.

Depends on the child and their age. I have never done the tour because I am too chicken, although I did live in Paris. I think I would not take a child; if I got up the nerve to go on the tour.

To me it is just too much germs.

Your time is better spent in the Louvre or some of the other museums.

Go_Know_Thyself
Smelly, dark, damp, full of germs and weirdos and therefore no, without a proper tour guide, it is not wise to have children go into the sewers of Paris!

I believe most of it is sealed up. A few years ago there was an illegal cinema club operating underground, complete with electricity, furniture and a bar. It was abandoned and no one was caught.
