A lot of people (including the previous poster) confuse 5 and Arte. This is because they share a frequency on the analogue service, where 5 is in the daytime and Arte in the evening (after 7 pm). On digital networks they are separate channels broadcasting all the time.
Personally I prefer 5 to Arte. 5 is more documentary oriented, Arte is very, well Arty, but they do it in an way that is typical of their policy.
I tend to watch BBC channels via a satellite dish.
But I do like my daily fix of Les Guignols, a satirical puppet show on Canal Plus. Sadly now off the air for the summer.

I think the news and some of the documenteries on france 2 are interesting. M6 is the pop culture channel with everything a 12-14yr old girl or boy would want (and soft porn on something like saturday nights... I forget lol). 5 if I remember right is the european/art channel and they show lots of cool artsy stuff and documenteries sometimes in German or English. France2 has their news streamed online and info about their shows and some of the other shows aired. www.france2.fr.

Well it definitely depends on what you are interested in.
My favorite is France 5 because documentaries are always interesting. Series on M6 are fine too.
For me TF1 is a crap... stupid games and stupid films...

It definitely depens on what you're interested in!
Fr2 and Fr3 have a few good scientific talk shows and cultural programmes, TF1 is for you if you like reality shows and American tv series. Fr5 has some nice investigation/information shows and Canal+ broadcasts good movies and humoristic shows ("Les Guignols"). M6 shows a lot of soaps, not much.
But I'm only talking about the 6 main channels, if we could know what you're interested in, we could answer your question more accurately!
