What are the most lively and happening cities in France besides Paris ?

I am trying to find a younger city (in terms of demographics) that is really nice and active with a lot of students. Thanks!

BTW Suggestions outside of France are welcome too, but I would like to focus on France/French-Speaking areas.

Any university city in France is buzzing, and there are many.
Nice is a seaside resort that used to be patronised by genteel and affluent people, but which has grown enormously in past years and has acquired a reputation for thefts in particular from foreign tourists. The university is forward looking, has good links with foreign universities and participates in the Erasmus project.
In France there is no such thing as a "new town" demographically. Old cities have moved with the times. There are piazzas, open spaces and venues where all sorts of activities take place and festivals are held everywhere. Personally I favour Avignon, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Montpellier, probably because they are in the South, but Rennes and Nantes in Brittany are also vibrant, and the same could be said about almost every town where there is a university at the heart of the city. Strasbourg and Nancy are also great and multi-lingual due to their links with the EU headquarters and the vicinity with Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany. Grenoble is extremely close to ski slopes in the winter , and everybody knows about those lively après-ski parties...! Lyon is cosmopolitan and a gourmet's paradise. You are spoilt for choice as it is, so I'll stop there....

Rennes in Brittany is a lively city. If you go out on friday night it is very crowded. People is pretty young thanks to the universities, high schools and everything.
Their are many entertainments : bars, cinemas, bowling, shopping...
