One of the most awesome things to see and to experience in the south of France is the Canal du Midi which links the Atlantic to the Med. It was built in the 17th century and is an incredible feat of engineering and architecture. It is also a nice, tranquil way to go from one spot to another by houseboat whilst on your quest for famous painters.

Montpellier is a fantastic city. It has one of the best known universities in France and has a lively night life. Lots of museums and art galleries. Brilliant tram system. Lots of nice cafes, particularly around Place de la Comedie (unfortunately marred by a Macdonalds or Burger King or something). Friendly people especially if you speak French but English is understood in most hotels and shops. There are beaches not far away.
Avignon is also one of my favourite French cities. The Popes Palace is a must see!

Caracassonne. not too far from Perpignan...isn't that where Van Gogh and Monet both lived? Can't remember. Yeah, I think that's where the Impressionists congregated.

Provence...like, all of it, but especially Aix-en-Provence and Avignon.

The Med coast regions of Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur and Languedoc-Roussillon have attracted many artists.

Van Gogh is associated with Arles.

However, the Cote d'Azur, Rousillion and the Costa Brava (just over the border in Spain) all have been artist centres.
