What can I expect traveling to Paris during the second half of May? |
What can I expect the weather to be like? I'm also staying in the Champs-Elysees area. Have you ever stayed there? What can I expect that I haven't already read in travel guide books? I'm looking for an answer from someone with first hand travel experience during this time of year. |

Be sure to request a hotel with air conditioning!!!!!
We stayed a few blocks from the Eiffel Tower and almost died of heat every single night! Because it was so hot during the day, it stormed every single night, which was kind of nice because we opened up our window and caught a breeze.
Be sure to bring a compact umbrella for everyone in your group - you don't want to lug around a huge golf umbrella, but you will definitely need to take one every where you go because the weather is iffy each day.
We visited the American Embassy when we first arrived, and they suggested we buy a pass for the underground train - not a good idea, as the train didn't stop near anything we wanted to see! So.......invest in some really good walking shoes and plan on doing the city by foot. It's the best way to really get close to the Parisians anyway. Remember --- it's PARIS, so if you are easily offended, you'll be frequently offended! We witnessed a couple making love on the grass in a park right up from the Louvre! It fascinated my young son, who thought they were wrestling! LOL
Enjoy your stay -- and plan to spend several hours standing in line for the Louvre and Tower, but they are SO worth it!
I wish you well!!! |

The weather will be mild and pleasant. Average high temperature is 18 degrees celsius/64 degrees farenheit, and the average low is 9 celcius, 49 farenheit.
However, you can expect a fair amount of rain. Average number of days with precipitation is sixteen. Since Paris is a city best seen on foot, you're going to get wet.
Your most important clothing choice is taking the right shoes. Make sure you have a good pair of proper walking shoes. Forget fashion. (Although I suggest you not wear white trainers...the ultimate mark of a tourist). I carry one of those light rain slickers that folds up into a tiny package and fits in my pocket rather than an umbrella since I like having both hands free at all times. Whatever you choose make sure to have one or the other.
I don't know what guide books you have so there is no way to determine what you've already read.
May is an excellant time to visit Paris. The flood of tourists who innudate the city every year will not yet have begun to have a major impact.
I personally find the area of the Champs-Elysees not very inviting. Its become a rather glitzy, neon filled, strip mall for multinational companies.
When I first began to visit Paris, more than three decades ago, it still retained a bit of the glamour that it had had during the Belle Epoque a century ago, but its now more like Wayne Newton than Coco Chanel.
Of course, its still perfectly safe and while, in my opinion, not the absolute most convenient location from which to see the city, its still very central. |
