The Man in the Iron Mask, who's identity is still in question, was held in a number of prisons including the Bastille, Chateau d'If, Pignerol and the Island of Sainte-Margeurite, none of which attract millions of visitors, unless you count the number of tourists who take photos of the column where the Bastille used to stand. He was certainly not imprisoned in Versailles or the Louvre.

Rillifane
The so called man in the Iron Mask was said to originally have been held at the prison of Pignerol. He was later said to have been transferred to the fortress of Exiles (Both Pignerol and Exiles were then in France but now in Italy) and then to the Bastille.

He was most certainly never imprisoned in either the Louvre or Versailles both of which were still Royal palaces during the time of the ancien regime and not prisons.

L'Homme au masque de fer' died in the Bastille in 1703. He was reputed to be a relation of Louis XIII, but no one is certain. For a number of years he was treated like a 'trustee' and served as a valet to 2 noble men in France.
There are 3 CHateaus he was definitely held prisoner in:
Pignerol
Chateau D'If
La Bastille.
The latter is where he died.
Several other have unfounded claims that he was imprisoned with him.
The Bastille is the one with 10.6 million visitors per year

SUE
Ummm. no. He was imprisoned in the Bastille. It's gone. torn down by the peasants in 1789. Big deal, you know. Start of the French Revolution and all that.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bastille

He was supposedly moved to someplace in Marseilles, but I'm not sure that was ever mentioned as an actual castle.

MickeyMantis
The castle should be Chateau Versailles as that is where Louis XIV resided.
