I don't like generalizations. It all depends on the person. |

If Jaqcues Chirac is any indication I would want nothing to do with the arrogant mongrels. |

I think the French are wonderful - outside Paris. Paris is a wonderful place to visit for a couple of days - you won't see everything in that time, but you will have had enough of city life by then.
Parisians seem to be universally disliked - even by their compatriots - because of their manners.
We've had many holidays in France, and - just like the UK - or any other country for that matter - you will always find pockets of places where you'd rather not be and the people seem threatening and unpleasant, but in the rural areas of France we have always met with great kindness, good humour (chiefly due to our appalling mangling of the French language, I think) and courtesy.
If you can, get hold of a book called '60 Million Frenchmen can't be Wrong' by Jean-Benoit Nadeau and Julie Barlow, IBSN code 1-86105-715-6, published by Robson Books, The Chrysalis Building, Bramley Road, London, W10 6SP. Published in the USA by Sourcebooks Inc. Both the authors are Canadian journalists who lived in France for a while and it gives a very good background into why the French are the way they are. In order to understand the French, you need to know about their culture, and this book helps a lot. |

They cook well, but not nearly as well as the Italians. In fact, it was the Italians who introduced the fork to the French. |

The french I have met have been here in Australia and have been really cool and funny. But that could just be their personalities rather than their nationalities.
The myth that french people hate english people is not a myth after all. They distinctly dislike American tourists, because the Americans don't make an effort. The french appreciate a poorly pronounced Bon Jour when the conversation starts over a Hi. If we make a small effort to communicate in their language, they will talk to us in ours. |

Hi Fiona, one of the interesting things about this site, is that when you have seen thousands of questions, there emerges a similarity and repeating theme in many of the questions.
I have learned a very interesting word on this site which explains your type of question.
ethnocentric: an adjective describing the condition of viewing and judging (often in pejorative terms) other cultures and societies according to the (usually taken-for-granted) assumptions of ones own society.
If you want more information, just type the word into your search engine.
The word really explains what you are searching for:
The French love their country and are self absorbed with their own culture and way of life.
The Germans love their country and.......etc.
The Italians love....etc,
The Swiss love...etc.
The English love...etc
The Americans love...etc.
Get the picture? |

The people of the country-side are absolutely wonderful. They are so warm and welcoming. The people of Paris are so arrogant and snooty though. If I were to take another long trip, I would live in the country-side. |

My wife and I just returned from France in late March. I speak almost no french. She only speaks a little. However, everywhere we went throughout Paris, Lyon and the south of France, the people were all very nice everywhere. As long as you at least TRY to speak their language, they appreciate it. My training was in spanish so often I'd try to make up french words. They'd usually giggle but could usually figure out what I was trying to say and we all had a laugh. Waiters in France are not like in the U.S.: they take your order, they bring you your food, and that's about it. If you need anything else, you summon them. It was a refreshing change from the constant bother by the wait people here in the U.S. |
