Bonjour!
I am English but have lived in Pau for three years.
It takes a lot of time to understand French culture. The first year I was in shock, the second year I hated it and now at last I understand the French. You have a beautiful country and you are stubborn at upholding your traditions but I believe that it is possible to find a lot of meaning here, enjoying the simple pleasures of life. I have found people here to be very kind and tolerant but only if you make real efforts to speak French. That's fair enough. I do feel that the country is a little insular, though, and the service is terrible and they live off past reputation. But, all things considered, you are so different but it would be a boring world without you. |

I have a friend who just returned from Europe (Germany, France and Spain), and she said that France was the best place that she had visited. When I ask if they were rude, she said not at all and that the Germans were actually the worst! Guess France/French aren't so bad after all. |

I've been to France several times (skiing in Chamonix and Lac de Tignes, a week on the Cote d'Azur, and a weekend in Paris) and have always enjoyed myself. Restaurant service in Paris is horrible, but I've never had problems anywhere else. |

I loved it, end of story. Nobody was rude or smelly to me. Many people beg to differ with me though I would go find out for yourself. |

Love France, beautiful country, great food great place. The French a little haughty but it comes from their belief that they are right, much like another country we know. |

A great country, very beautiful cities & culture, nature, scenery. Good food, wine, very relaxed to go on holiday..
Unfortunately it is very important to speak at least some French. The French are probably among the most conservative, nationalist nations in the world. If you don't speak French they will treat you poorly, especially if you are American. Young people will speak english and are usually relaxed and friendly. NEVER be recognisable as an american. When asked, be Australian...
ah, Marie, tu es Francaise, n'est ce pas. Je m' excuse, mais c'est la verite... |

France is the first touristisc nation in the world. We have the most foreigners coming every year. As a French I should defend my country.
But some people said the truth. In a recent survey, foreigners and even French people said that the way French treat tourist was not the best in the world. It is not that we don't like foreigner tourists but maybe we don't how to serve them as often French don't speak English and we'll see foreigners as a burden.
Nonetheless, it is not like this everywhere and you don't have to be in France to be treated like this. So don't hesitate to come to France. |

Have not heard good things. I hear that the French are all stuck up and extremely rude to foreigners. They are full of themselves. I am so happy London won the 2012 Olympics. |

Speaking as an American that visited France back in 1987, I can say that all those stereotypical statements about the French hating us is the truth. Only in Normandy are there any French that actually respect us.
Frankly, I kind of wish we left the Nazis there! |
